Portoferraio is a small village with a considerable history, a history of banishments, imprisoned criminals, and, naturally, tourism. From the time of the ancient Romans, through the Middle Ages until, between 1814 and 1815, when all of Elba Island was ironically granted to the exiled Napoleon Bonaparte, this small port was the star of many episodes that have rendered it unique, the nerve centre of a stunning island, both in terms of history and nature.
Founded at the time of the Etruscans, Piombino is today the second biggest port in Tuscany, after Livorno, and is the largest city in Val di Cornia. Situated on the coast between mountains and the sea, the city offers tourists many interesting natural spaces and architectural monuments, including artworks by masters such as Leonardo da Vinci and Andrea Guardi. The local beaches are also stunning, such as Baratti, famous for its red sand.
