Where the Castello del Volterraio is located
The Castello del Volterraio stands on a rocky hill in the northeast of the Island of Elba, overlooking the Portoferraio bay. Its strategic location has always played a crucial role in defending the maritime routes surrounding the island.
Purchased by the Tuscan Archipelago National Park in 1999, the castle was in a state of decay. Restoration work began in 2016 aimed at securing the structure, restoring the original entrance, the walkway, and the tower with a footbridge. The completion of the second phase in July 2017 improved the access paths and recovered the original flooring, making the castle more accessible and enhancing its historical connection with the island.
How to reach it
To reach the Castello del Volterraio from the Island of Elba, the most common departure point is Portoferraio, the main port of access to the island, where ferries from Piombino arrive.
Once in Portoferraio, head towards Porto Azzurro by following the provincial road. After about 6 km, turn left following the signs for Magazzini/Bagnaia. After about 1.5 km, turn right towards Rio nell’Elba, taking a particularly steep and winding road: it is recommended to proceed with caution.
About 1.4 km from the turn, there is a large parking lot where you can leave your car. From here, only 50 meters further, the dirt path to the Castello del Volterraio begins. The path is approximately 1.4 km long (round trip), with a 190-meter elevation gain.
This is a hiking trail with an uneven surface and considerable slope, so it is recommended to wear suitable footwear and bring enough water.
