In the heart of Piombino stands the Teatro Metropolitan, one of the city’s main cultural landmarks and a key reference point for the entire southern area of the Livorno province. The current building, inaugurated in 1951, was built on the foundations of the old Theatre of the Accademia dei Ravvivati, dating back to 1834. The latter, a classic Italian-style theatre with three tiers of boxes, had become inadequate for the community’s new needs and unsuitable for film screenings.
The new Metropolitan was therefore conceived as a modern and functional structure, featuring a spacious foyer and a large hall that could accommodate over 600 spectators (later expanded to about 860 after renovations). In 1984, the building was purchased by the Municipality of Piombino, which entrusted its management to the Nuovo Metropolitan Cooperative, responsible for both film and theatre programming.
Between 1987 and 1989, the theatre underwent major renovation and modernization work as part of a regional project for theatre infrastructure. Over the following years, the Metropolitan became a true cultural hub, offering theatre seasons, concerts, and a vibrant film schedule, including the “Cinema d’autore” series, usually held in the early days of the week.
Today, the Teatro Metropolitan is temporarily closed, yet it remains a symbolic place for the Piombino community, waiting to once again welcome audiences and performances with the same passion as always.
