Elba beaches with Scirocco wind: guide to the sheltered northern shores

Is the south-easterly blowing? Find out where to swim when the Scirocco hits Elba Island: Blu Navy’s guide to the most beautiful beaches on the northern coast.

Travel Tips

If you are planning a holiday on Elba Island, there is one daily habit that turns a simple stay into a perfect experience: checking the Elba weather and the wind forecast every morning before heading out. The island has an extraordinary and complex topography. Thanks to its deep inlets and rocky headlands that create opposing bays, Elba always offers a wind-sheltered stretch of coast, at any time of year.

Knowing how to read the direction of the currents means finding a crystal-clear and calm sea, regardless of where the winds blow from. You just need to choose the right side.

Along with the Maestrale, the Scirocco is the wind that blows most often during the summer on Elba. It arrives from the South/South-East directly from Africa, bringing warm air, humidity and sometimes a slightly hazy sky. When it strengthens, it churns up the sea on the southern and eastern sides, raising waves and washing some posidonia onto the beach. No need to panic: to save the day, simply move to the opposite coast. In this practical guide by Blu Navy, we reveal where to go on Elba when the Scirocco blows to find sheltered bays and flat water.

Why the Scirocco affects beach choice on Elba Island

Understanding how wind and sea work on Elba is very simple: when the Scirocco blows from the South-East, it hits the coasts of Capoliveri, Porto Azzurro, Rio and the large beach of Marina di Campo full-on. At the same time, the inland mountains (with Monte Capanne acting as a natural shield) block the wind, completely protecting the northern side of the island.

Moving to the northern coast, from Portoferraio up to the beaches of Marciana, the effects of the Scirocco disappear. The wind, having crossed the mountains, arrives on the shore warm and dry, pushing the waves and impurities out to sea. This is how the sea transforms: it becomes flat and crystal-clear, the water transparent and the seabed perfect both for snorkelling and for children’s swimming.

The northern coast of Elba caters to everyone: both those who prefer fine sandy beaches, comfortable and equipped, and those looking for wilder, hidden coves. Here is our selection of the best shores to reach to enjoy the sea when the Scirocco blows.

The white beaches of Portoferraio: a Caribbean paradise

This stretch of coast, located just behind the historic centre of Portoferraio, is famous for its imposing white rock cliffs. When the Scirocco blows, the contrast between the white pebbles and the flat sea creates a uniquely transparent spectacle.

Le Ghiaie: the town beach of Portoferraio, located just a few minutes by car or on foot from the Blu Navy ferry landing. Made up of small, smooth white pebbles (which legend says were coloured by the sweat of the Argonauts), the beach is part of a historic marine protected area for biological conservation. With the Scirocco, the water is so clear that schools of bream, sea bass and red mullet can be seen with the naked eye right from the shore.

Capo Bianco and La Padulella: two twin beaches, separated by a tall rocky spur. The dazzling white cliffs surrounding them completely block the South-East gusts, creating a calm, clean sea with turquoise hues. A small tip: here the sunbed and umbrella rentals are more limited than on the large sandy beaches. Also, the paid car park (blue lines) is close by but fills up very quickly, so arriving early is advisable.

Sottobomba and Seccione: for those looking for a wilder, more authentic and less crowded setting, these two coves are an excellent choice. They are reached by descending stairways carved into the rock and, precisely because the coves are set beneath the cliff, you will be completely sheltered from southerly winds.

Sansone and La Sorgente: considered among the most beautiful and most photographed beaches in Europe. At Sansone, on the right, there is a rock just a few metres from the shore, perfect for diving, while on the left a large sea stack is a favourite destination for kayakers and canoeists. Together with the nearby, smaller La Sorgente, this bay is at its finest with the Scirocco: the wind cleans the water and makes it transparent, ideal for snorkelling and underwater photography.

The Gulf of Viticcio and the cove of Acquaviva

We now move westward, along the Enfola peninsula, where the coast becomes wilder, with hidden coves surrounded by the intense scents of the Mediterranean scrubland.

Acquaviva: a small and picturesque inlet of dark gravel and sand. Well sheltered and surrounded by maritime pines, it is the ideal spot on Scirocco days for those in search of absolute tranquillity.

The large sandy beaches: Biodola and Procchio for families

If you are travelling with the family, have young children or simply love the feeling of golden sand beneath your feet, the large northern bays are the perfect destination when the southerly wind blows.

La Biodola beach: enclosed in a natural amphitheatre dominated by holm oak woodland, this beautiful sandy beach transforms under the Scirocco into a huge azure pool. The sea becomes flat and transparent and the very gradually sloping seabed allows the little ones to play at the water’s edge in complete safety.

Procchio beach: at the centre of the northern coast, it is one of the largest sandy beaches and most comfortable on the entire island. Facing North/North-East, it is very well sheltered from the Scirocco (though it may be slightly affected if the wind shifts to Libeccio). It is rich in equipped establishments, jetties and services: the ideal choice for maximum comfort.

Moving further west: Marciana Marina and Sant’Andrea

For those wanting to venture beyond the most frequented circuits around Portoferraio, the northern coast offers two more gems perfectly sheltered from the Scirocco thanks to Monte Capanne:

La Fenicia (Marciana Marina): located at the end of the village seafront promenade. This beach of large smooth pebbles offers crystal-clear water, full services and complete protection from inland winds.

Sant’Andrea (Marciana): a beautiful sandy cove surrounded by the famous smooth granite cliffs. With the Scirocco wind, the water here becomes a true natural swimming pool, ideal for snorkelling among rich marine life.

Practical tips to avoid traffic and enjoy the day

Choosing the beach according to the wind is the real secret to experiencing Elba like a local. There is, however, one practical detail to keep in mind: on days of strong Scirocco, a great many tourists move together towards the northern beaches, especially to Sansone, to the Biodola and to Capo Bianco.

To avoid parking issues, the advice is clear: set your alarm a little earlier and move early in the morning. Alternatively, you can skip the car altogether by using local public transport or the summer shuttle buses (such as the Marebus) that connect the main centres to the most famous beaches.

After a day spent sheltered from the Scirocco, the northern side is also perfect in the evening. Coastal villages like Marciana Marina or the historic centre of Portoferraio are ideal for an aperitivo with local wines, such as the Ansonica, or for enjoying traditional Elban cuisine by the sea. This perfect balance of nature, calm water and good food is what makes every day on Elba a restorative experience.

The journey to this paradise begins on board the Blu Navy ferries, which connect Piombino and Portoferraio for a smooth, punctual and relaxing crossing. Plan your next holiday: buy your ticket online and sail with Blu Navy to the gentler side of Elba.
