The Island of Elba in September: climate, sea and why it’s the best month to visit

Anyone who has already visited the Island of Elba in August knows how busy it can get: roads clogged with traffic, beaches where you need to arrive before nine to find space, ferries booked months in advance. September is a different story. Same beaches, same sea (often warmer), with the difference that you can actually breathe. For those with flexible dates, it’s the month we recommend without a doubt.

Elba does not suddenly empty out on 1 September. The tourist season continues, restaurants stay open, and most beach clubs keep running until the end of the month. What changes is the density: families with school-aged children leave, the long queues for the ferry shrink, and villages such as Capoliveri and Marciana Marina regain a certain calm.

The result is that September on Elba combines nearly all the advantages of summer: warm sea, beautiful beaches, services still open, but with a more relaxed atmosphere and lower prices than the July-August peak. Blu Navy ferries continue to operate, with 24 crossings until the end of September. It’s worth checking the updated timetable before fixing your return date.

In September, Elba still has a fully summer climate. Daytime temperatures average between 24 and 27°C, with peaks that on the hottest days can approach 30°C. In the evening they drop to around 17–19°C: cool enough to sleep without air conditioning and to enjoy dinner outdoors with something light over your shoulders.

The few degrees less than August are often an advantage, especially for those who want to go hiking or trekking without suffering the oppressive heat of the central weeks of summer.

This is one of the less intuitive reasons to choose September. The Tyrrhenian Sea reaches its peak temperature during this period, not in August: the water absorbs heat throughout the summer and releases it gradually in autumn. The result: average sea temperatures between 23 and 25°C, sometimes higher than in July, with the sea remaining wonderfully pleasant right until the end of the month.

The chance of rain in September is low, especially in the first half of the month, but it starts to rise towards the end. Cloudy days are not common, though the occasional afternoon storm is possible in the last week. The winds (Maestrale and Scirocco) are still present, which in practice means that choosing the right beach based on the day’s wind direction remains a useful habit.

Underwater visibility reaches its annual peak precisely in September: with the seasonal drop in plankton and the sharp decrease in boat traffic, the waters become extraordinarily clear and transparent again. The marine life is much more active near the coast, making more frequent close encounters with large groupers, hunting amberjack and barracuda. Among the most spectacular diving sites, still fully accessible thanks to open diving schools, are Scoglio d’Africa, the Formiche di Grosseto and the splendid Secca di Fonza.

In summer, Monte Capanne, at 1,019 metres (the highest peak in the Tuscan Archipelago), is often not recommended on foot during the central hours of the day. In September, the temperatures once again make the trail up from Poggio or Marciana walkable: a few hours of climbing, with a view that on clear days takes in Corsica, the Maremma and the other islands of the Archipelago.

The island’s trails, on both the northern and southern sides, are far more pleasant to walk than in the height of August. Those who prefer cycling will find September the ideal season for MTB routes along the ridges of Monte Capanne: the trails are demanding, but without the heat of the high season they become more manageable.

With fewer visitors, the beaches become reachable and enjoyable again, without traffic or parking problems. Sansone, Fetovaia, Capo Bianco: three of the island’s most beautiful stretches of coast, reachable without stress, with the sea at the peak of its seasonal beauty.

Organised excursions to Pianosa and Capraia generally run until October. In September, competition for the limited places is lower than in the summer months: for those who missed out on booking in August, it could be the chance to fit in a trip to Pianosa that is truly worth the journey.

September brings with it one of the most characteristic events of the calendar: the grape harvest. Elba has produced wine for centuries: the DOC Elba designation covers whites, reds and rosés, while Aleatico Passito dell’Elba has earned DOCG status, the highest recognition for Italian wines.

The main grape varieties are Ansonica for the whites, Aleatico for the passito and Sangiovese for the reds. The Aleatico harvest takes place in the first half of September.

Some wineries open for tourist harvest experiences: you take part in the picking, taste the wine, and learn a little about the winemaking of a region that most tourists know only for its beaches. It’s worth booking ahead, as places are limited.

The price reduction after 15 August is noticeable. Ferries and accommodation apply lower rates than during the summer peak. Restaurants keep similar prices, but the chance to sit down without booking weeks in advance is already a saving of energy.

September has therefore all the ideal features for a visit to the Island of Elba: still warm weather, better prices than the summer high season, and fewer crowds. Perfect for those who aren’t tied to taking their holidays in August.
