Travel Guides

Marciana Marina, a jewel of Elba Island, enchants with its picturesque charm and stunning beaches. Nestled at the foot of Monte Capanne, this destination offers a harmonious blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.

Its granite-paved alleys, pastel-colored houses, and seafront adorned with centuries-old tamarisks create a unique atmosphere. Marciana Marina is perfect for those seeking both relaxation and adventure, with its crystal-clear waters ideal for swimming and hiking trails that offer breathtaking views.

From its rich maritime traditions to its delicious local cuisine, every corner of this village invites discovery.

Let’s explore together what to see in Marciana Marina, where history and nature embrace in an enchanting setting.

What to See in Marciana Marina

Within the lush embrace of Monte Capanne lie two treasures of Elba Island: Marciana and Marciana Marina. Though distinct, these villages together tell an ancient tale of the sea, mountains, and traditions.

Covering just five square kilometers, Marciana Marina is a jewel set between the sea and the forested slopes of Monte Capanne. Its shaded seafront is the perfect stage for romantic strolls and lively summer evenings.

This picturesque village, with its soft pastel-colored houses and granite-paved alleys, has captured the hearts of both tourists and filmmakers. It is here that “Pineta,” the set of the popular TV series “I Delitti del BarLume,” inspired by Marco Malvaldi’s novels, comes to life.

The history of Marciana Marina is steeped in maritime traditions and flavors

Once renowned for its wine production, the village was also an important tuna fishing center

On Bagno Beach stood one of the island’s most active tuna fisheries, a testament to a time when Elba was famous for its salted tuna, “sorra,” and “bottarga.” The last “mattanza” (traditional tuna harvest) took place on June 24, 1958, marking the end of an era.

Moving inland, at 375 meters above sea level, lies Marciana. This ancient village, dating back to 35 B.C., is an open-air history book.

Under the rule of the Appiani family, Marciana flourished, becoming a stronghold against pirate invasions thanks to its imposing fortress. Today, walking through its stepped alleys, adorned with flower-filled balconies, one can still breathe in the medieval atmosphere that makes it a timeless place.

The Archaeological Museum of Marciana is a treasure chest of history, telling the story of Elba from prehistory through the Etruscan and Roman eras. But the wonders don’t end there: a modern cable car takes visitors to the summit of Monte Capanne, offering breathtaking views.

Appiani Tower

The Appiani Tower, built in the 12th century, is the emblem of Marciana Marina. Once a sentinel against pirate raids, this historic stronghold now offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the Tyrrhenian coast. More than just a monument, the tower is a living symbol of the community’s resilience and rich maritime history.

Marciana Marina Seafront

The seafront of Marciana Marina is the town’s vibrant heart, an oasis of relaxation and energy. Lined with majestic century-old tamarisks, this coastal boulevard hosts a variety of cafés, restaurants, and boutiques. Here, you can savor the sweet life of Elba, enjoying an artisanal gelato or sipping an aperitif at sunset. On summer evenings, the seafront transforms into a lively stage of events and music.

Church of Santa Chiara

The Church of Santa Chiara, an 18th-century architectural gem, stands in the historic center of Marciana Marina. Its finely crafted frescoes and elegant Baroque style make it a must-visit site. This sacred place offers a moment of serene contemplation, a haven of peace within the town’s lively atmosphere.
